Climate change is leading to higher temperatures and bad weather – heavier and more frequent rainfall in particular. Given this phenomenon, EDF is innovating to improve the security of its dams, which are having to cope with an increasing number of floods. Such is the case of the Malarce dam, in Ardèche, which has been equipped with a new, latest-generation flood discharge system. This world-renowned innovation is called PKW, for Piano Key Weir, in reference to its design, which resembles the keys on a piano. With its crenelated form, the dam’s spill capacity is increased by 600 cubic metres a second. That’s enough to handle even a once-in-a-thousand-year flood.
