Understand the challenges of electric mobility in 2 minutes

Electrical mobility is one of the solutions for decarbonising the transport sector, which produces 35% of CO2 emissions in France. EDF is a historical actor in the electrical mobility ecosystem and is aiming to be the leading energy operator for this ecosystem in Europe. The Group’s researchers have been working on a global approach for several decades. From batteries to ultra-fast charging stations and self-driving vehicles to usage analysis, not forgetting the development of smart charging and hydrogen mobility, discover all our research projects aimed at boosting sustainable mobility.

Video transcript: “Electric Mobility”

For EDF, electrification is the leading solution for decarbonising the transport sector, which accounts for 35% of CO2 emissions.

The ambition is clear: to enable everyone to charge their electric vehicle wherever and whenever they want, while keeping costs under control and minimising the impact on the electricity grid.

To achieve this, R&D teams test and assess the performance of charging infrastructure and batteries for all types of vehicles, and develop dynamic charging management tools.

They also examine the environmental impact of electric vehicles, user behaviour and the barriers to their adoption. The economic challenges are also being studied.

R&D is also exploring hydrogen mobility, focusing on its most promising applications, local production and distribution, and the economic conditions required for its development.

All these initiatives are carried out in close collaboration with key players in the mobility ecosystem, including charging station manufacturers, car manufacturers and automotive equipment suppliers, public authorities, standardisation bodies and many others.

Finally, R&D is preparing for the future by focusing its research on the electrification of heavy-duty transport and the smart integration of these innovations into the electricity grid.

Three important things to remember

  • 35%

that’s the share of greenhouse gases produced by the transport sector.

  • 20 mins

the time required to charge a vehicle to 80% with an ultra-fast charging station.

  • 2 test platforms

on the EDF Lab site, Les Renardières: unit tests for terminals up to 500 kW and testing of high power charging stations up to 1.5 MW.

Ultra-fast charging

Primarily designed for long-distance travel, ultra-fast charging can recharge a car or light commercial vehicle in 15 to 20 minutes, compared with the 30 minutes currently required to reach 80% capacity. This is why R&D is working on this new technology.
