Radar and wind turbines don’t work well together, as the turbines cause interference. To get round the problem, EDF Renewables, together with Vestas, the turbine constructor, and defence specialists, QinetiQ, have designed a world-first: wind turbines with ”stealth” blades which work on technology used in aeronautics. Equipped with features, which dramatically reduce the reflectiveness of their components, the stealth wind turbines are much less visible to radar. This innovative solution enabled the Catalan wind farm to be built close to the Opoul-Périllos meteorological radar installation, only 22km away.

This is a major breakthrough which offers new potential for wind farm development.
