Led by Studsvik, SMILE (Studsvik Material Integrity Life Extension Project SMILE - Studsvik) was launched in 2021 to investigate metallic components and materials from decommissioned BWR and PWR nuclear power plants. This initiative aims to deepen understanding of ageing phenomena and improve predictive models. The dismantling of nuclear facilities presents a rare opportunity to study materials exposed to decades of operational conditions, offering valuable insights for ageing management and life extension strategies.

MAI’s involvement supports collaborative research and knowledge sharing to enhance the safety and sustainability of nuclear infrastructure worldwide.
