The “Risk and Resilience of Complex Systems” Research Chair
The aim is to address key challenges associated with large-scale industrial systems that combine electricity, railway and telecommunications networks. These systems are constantly evolving and becoming increasingly complex. Through this Research Chair, EDF and its partners aim to address the resulting industrial challenges by improving system modelling and facilitating knowledge and technology transfer, drawing on the scientific excellence of CentraleSupélec researchers.
The research will be carried out over five years under the coordination of Anne Barros, Professor at CentraleSupélec’s Industrial Engineering Laboratory. Her team comprises three experienced permanent academic staff members (two associate professors and one full professor), as well as several PhD students. Their work will focus on modelling complex systems, analysing the risks they face and optimising their resilience.

More than 10 years ago, CentraleSupélec placed complex systems at the heart of its curriculum, simply because today, all systems have become complex.

EDF is delighted to have joined forces with major partners such as SNCF and Orange. Each is a leading reference in research within its respective field of network operations. They bring outstanding expertise, as well as strong synergies and complementarity with EDF’s research themes. Furthermore, we are delighted to have worked with CentraleSupélec to recruit a highly talented and experienced researcher to lead the Chair. All these factors leave no doubt that the newly named “Risk and Resilience of Complex Systems” Chair has a very promising future.
Les 3 axes de travail pour ce projet scientifique
- Modelling systems of systems and interdependencies to manage risks and enhance resilience across multiple operators.
- Modelling and optimising maintenance phases to minimise their impact on service continuity within and across operators.
- Developing a shared platform of models and methods and conducting sensitivity analyses.
