R&D is taking action on environmental and climate issues

For more than 30 years, EDF R&D has been working on climate change to understand, inform and take action. Today, although EDF’s power generation facilities have very low carbon emissions and are a key pillar in the fight against climate change, they must adapt to its impacts.

Just as awareness of climate change has grown, awareness of biodiversity loss is more relevant than ever. Although EDF has been addressing this issue for several decades, the company is now stepping up its efforts to protect biodiversity and has made significant commitments in this area, at the heart of its corporate purpose, alongside the French government.

Did you know that EDF R&D has a dedicated climate service?

Around 15 climate scientists, forecasters and hydrologists are working to assess the impacts of climate change on EDF’s existing and future generation fleet, changes in renewable energy generation potential, and changes in energy demand. Discover the challenges facing this team in the video.

EDF R&D’s Climate Service

The 2003 heatwave (maximum temperature reached: 44°C) was a turning point for EDF: climate change is here, and we need to adapt our activities.

Fortunately, thanks to the expertise on climate change that EDF R&D has developed since the 1990s, it had already developed methods to anticipate extreme temperatures. These methods were implemented to quickly provide data to support the adaptation of the nuclear fleet.

As the need for climate change impact studies grew steadily across various areas of the company, a dedicated Climate Service was gradually established. Its mission? To provide information on future climate trends, enabling the EDF Group to prepare for the challenges ahead.

The Climate Service is built on three pillars:

  • A thorough understanding and appropriate use of the extensive climate data available for the past and future projections: air and water temperatures, wind, solar radiation, precipitation, and more...
  • The development of statistical methods to adapt climate projections at local, regional and even international level.
  • Maintaining expertise through collaborations with institutions such as CERFACS, Météo-France, IPSL and many others.

This expertise is widely recognized, as two EDF R&D researchers were among the official reviewers of the Summary for Policymakers of the latest IPCC report.

Working closely with EDF Group entities, R&D plays a key role in adapting all of its activities to climate change, from generation to consumption, including balancing the electricity system.
