EDF decides to definitively shutdown the Cordemais thermal power plant and confirms plans to launch a new industrial activity on the site

Paris, 28 May 2025 – Following the consultation of EDF SA’s Central Social and Economic Committee (CSEC) on 27 May 2025 and the submission of its conversion plan to the relevant State authorities, EDF has decided to permanently shutdown the last two production units of the Cordemais thermal power plant as of 31 March 2027. The company also confirms its intention to establish a nuclear prefabrication plant on the site.

This decision follows EDF’s announcement in September 2024 to stop the biomass conversion project, as the technical and economic conditions for the Ecocombust project were not met. EDF is thus ending coal-fired electricity generation in France, in line with the provisions of the Energy-Climate Law.

EDF group will manage this shutdown responsibly, ensuring individual support for employees to help them plan the next steps in their professional careers.

In accordance with the provisions of the law dated 14 April 2025, EDF submitted a conversion plan to the relevant State authorities. This plan concluded that the technical and economic conditions required for the proposed projects were not met. As a result, EDF announced that it would not proceed with the biomass conversion project for the Cordemais thermal power plant.

EDF confirms its intention to maintain industrial operations at the strategic Cordemais site. Framatome, a subsidiary of EDF group, has already begun studies for the construction of a nuclear prefabrication plant on the site, with commissioning planned for the end of 2028. The facility is expected to eventually employ up to 200 people.
