The EDF Pulse Awards reveal the best of local innovation
Launched in 2014 to identify and recognise the most innovative French and European startups, the EDF Pulse Awards are now taking place in France's regions and are expanding to our subsidiaries in Europe, highlighting local technological gems.
As the first region to offer its own EDF Pulse Awards in 2015-2016, the Occitanie region in France jumped at the chance to repeat the experience with a second edition of its competition, with the winners revealed in Toulouse on 23 February.
Seven of the startups shortlisted for the EDF Pulse Occitanie final will receive support from EDF teams to develop their projects through a Proof of Concept – a chance to carry out full-scale trials of their projects.
Of these, three winners wowed the jury of professionals with their bold solutions in the “Industrial Performance”, “Sustainable Region” and “Innovative Service” categories: Simsoft 3D pour SmartSiDO, a smart and proactive virtual assistant that monitors facilities; IOTEROP for its next-generation smart object technology; and MYFEELBACK for its customer feedback analysis software.
As well as receiving EDF support to develop awareness of their brands, the three winners also received prize money of €10,000 each.

Across the Channel, EDF Energy awards prizes to five innovative young startups
The competition has been expanded to other countries, and the first results from the United Kingdom are in. On 17 February, the five winners of the EDF Energy Pulse Awards were revealed. One such winner was Sophie Deen, a young woman who entered the “Inspiring Young People Into STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) category. She won the jury over with Detective Dot, a programme that creates adventure stories and educational quests to help get young people into science and coding.
In the “Blue Lab Connected Home And Business” category, the Manchester-based startup Howz was recognised for its connected home system that allows family members to view their electrical “activity” and check that everyone is safe.
Identifying every local gem...
This innovative approach, supported by EDF Pulse, is continuing to expand both in France and Europe.
Following in the footsteps of Occitanie, as well as those of the Auvergne-Rhône Alpes region, where the EDF Pulse – Energies Intelligentes competition supports true startup gems every year, French regions are getting involved in the EDF Pulse adventure one by one, linking EDF's history with regional startups. In the Hauts de France region, the first edition has already seen the smart henhouse from Awelty and XP Digit smart beacon solution win the Smart Home and Smart Maintenance prizes respectively. In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, five projects were presented with awards last December, including HYSILABS, in the Low-Carbon City category, with its hydrogen-based liquid fuel solution, and SWAP, voted the jury's favourite for its GPS keyring for those suffering from Alzheimer's.
On the other side of the Alps, in Italy, the fourth edition of the Edison Pulse competition is in full swing, and will recognise the best Italian startups in March.
There are almost as many different editions as there are fields being explored and promising young companies being brought into the spotlight. EDF's work with startups is a story that keeps on getting better!
