Household waste to ripen tomatoes

  • Household waste to ripen tomatoes

Getting agriculture on board

The agricultural sector is a huge consumer of energy, so the energy transition of regions has to draw this sector in its wake. Dalkia Wastenergy, a Dalkia subsidiary, specialising in waste recovery, is actively doing its part in Parentis-en-Born in the Landes region of France. The solution concerns a 10 hectare glasshouse growing truss tomatoes. This eco-greenhouse no longer consumes any fossil fuel for growing its crop.

Recovering household waste

As the operator of the nearby waste-to-energy plant, Dalkia Wastenergy has developed a local circular economy loop. A heat network has been created between the glasshouse and the plant, which treats household waste from the area. The aim is to recover all the heat given off by the combustion of the waste to heat the 100,000 square metre Les Grands Lacs glasshouse. The entire annual crop of tomatoes therefore relies on an abundant, locally available source of green energy.

40,000 MWh: the annual quantity of heat supplied to the eco-glasshouse

80%: energy efficiency of the waste-to-energy plant

30%: energetic efficiency for the unity of waste treatment
