EDF group supplies electricity and gas to nearly 39 million residential, business and local authority customers worldwide. It is a major energy supplier in the key European markets: France, UK, Italy and Belgium.
Active in efficiency, innovative services to support new uses, decentralised electricity generation, urban services and electric mobility : EDF group has a number of specialist companies to support customers in their energy transition.
EDF group’s transformation is based on an energy mix that combines nuclear power with renewables. The Group wants to be a key player in the energy programmes of France and the core European countries where it operates by participating in decarbonising the European economy in phase with public policies.
The main feature of the Group’s operational performance in 2019 was a drop in nuclear output in France and the UK due to lower availability of the fleet caused by extended nuclear unit shutdowns.
EDF group is the world’s leading nuclear operator, with 58 reactors in France and 15 in the United Kingdom. These facilities give France a considerable lead over its European neighbours in terms of limiting greenhouse gas emissions while keeping the price of electricity down.
EDF group is the leading electricity company for installed capacity in renewables in France and the European Union, and it confirmed its acceleration in renewable energy in France – with almost 200 MW of capacity commissioned, 2019 was a record year for onshore wind power.
With over 73 TWh generated in 2019, EDF group is European leader in renewables, the biggest producer of hydropower in the EU, and an actor in the energy transition.
EDF group is among the world’s leading electricity companies, not only in terms of net installed capacity and electricity generation but also in terms of carbon performance, with the very low carbon intensity of 66 g of CO2 per kWh generated in 2019* when average emissions worldwide, while falling, are still around 485 g/kWh**.
* Direct emissions excluding the life cycle analysis of generating plant and fuel.
** CO2 Emission Factors, International Energy Agency, 2019 (2017 data).
