The environment: central to EDF’s hydroelectric operations

Hydropower is the leading source of renewable energy and is set to play a key role in Europe, where 20% of electricity will have to be generated by renewables by 2020. To help expand generation of sustainable hydroelectricity, EDF focuses on long-term water conservation, while protecting natural environments in the vicinity of its generating plants.

Water management

EDF manages 75% of the surface water in France. The Group works with local stakeholders to share the resource and use it responsibly. EDF is also involved in long-term conservation, which is affected by global warming.

Biodiversity conservation

One of EDF’s major goals is to ensure compatibility between biodiversity and hydroelectric generation and more broadly to protect animals and plants near generation sites.
