In the United Kingdom, average spot electricity prices rose by 5 3 % from 2016 to 51 7 / MWh. The increase was most marked in the first quarter due to the cold weather of January... In France, the average annual year ahead contract baseload price was 38 2 / MWh, up by 14 6 % from 2016, principally due to the rise in commodity prices.

The month of January was 5 4 °C warmer than in 2017, reducing year on year consumption for January by 8 .6TWh with an average price of 35 0 / MWh, down by 43 0 / MWh from 2017... In France, the average annual contract baseload price for next year delivery was nearly 19 % higher than in first-half 2017.

This was first driven by the significant increase in French hydro output, partially offset by a lower average spot price compared to H1 2017 as hydro output is valued here based on spot prices. H1 2018 was marked by the absence of such adverse events, as well as by market sales driven by more favourable price conditions.
