The Group generates its electricity from a mix of energy sources in generating plants designed, built and maintained by EDF. Clean energy generation tailored to the needs of the market
EDF offers a diverse energy mix that is tailored to the needs of each country to generate safe, affordable, low-carbon electricity. This mix includes:
Nuclear power: 78% of the electricity generated by the Group comes from nuclear power plants. This power source allows EDF to respond effectively and sustainably to growth in demand
Conventional fossil-fired power: 13% of the electricity generated by the Group comes from conventional fossil-fired power plants (6% thermal fossil excluding gas & 7% combined cycle gas and cogeneration). In addition to offering the lowest operating costs in the energy mix, the rapid start-up capability of these plants makes it possible to adjust generation in response to daily fluctuations in demand and peaks of consumption
Renewable energy sources contribute 9% of the EDF energy mix. That contribution is scheduled to increase substantially with the further development of solar photovoltaic, wind power, biomass, geothermal and marine energy sources. Hydropower was the first form of renewable energy generated by EDF, and now offers the valuable capability of providing variable input to balance supply and demand.
Gas is also a strategically important factor in supplying the Group's generating plants and millions of customers.
Engineering that draws on all the expertise of an architect/integrator
The Group's Engineering business designs, maintains and decommissions power generating plants. The experience and skills of 20,000 Group employees are decisive factors for generating plant performance and safety. Their recognised expertise is exported worldwide and makes the Group a key contributor to the largest international projects.
EDF Engineering designs and manages the construction of power generating plants and industrial facilities. These skills have enabled EDF to design the first EPR nuclear reactor at Flamanville in France, commission the Nam Theun hydropower dam in Vietnam, and build a gas-fired combined-cycle conventional power plant at West Burton in the UK
EDF Engineering supports, maintains and refurbishes power plants and industrial facilities throughout their operating lives in order to boost their performance and maximise their levels of safety and quality.
EDF Engineering decommissions power plants
and industrial facilities that have reached the end of their productive life. All plant decommissioning operations meet the highest standards of safety, security and environmental impact.
