EDF has succeeded in halving the surface weight of rigid PV modules (from 12kg/m2 to 6kg/m2), whilst still complying with current standards. Light and thin, Solight is designed for the roofs of office and commercial buildings. Up to now, photovoltaics have not been able to penetrate this sector as the roof structures could not withstand the weight. Patented by EDF, the module incorporates many innovative features. It uses flat-screen glass, which is less than 1mm thick, while most traditional modules use 3.2mm glass. What’s more, using materials from the aeronautic industry means that the module is tougher and more efficient.
