In Saint-Georges de l’Oyapock in Guyana, EDF is participating in the launch of a 100% renewable smart grid, which combines hydroelectricity and biomass. The project is designed to foster energy transition in the region. As part of the project, EDF will upgrade its Saut Maripa hydro-electric plant and Abiodis Guyane will undertake construction of a wood biomass plant. The whole project will be managed using a smart system linked to an energy storage facility to regulate energy production to match demand.

This local electricity system, which will supply a town of 4000 inhabitants, is the first project of this size in France. It will enable Saint-Georges to reduce its dependence on fuel-oil and to improve the quality of its electricity supply. From 2019, the town of Saint-Georges will be self-sufficient with a 100% green electricity supply.
