Is breathing really a health hazard? Studies suggest that around 9 million people die every year as a result of air pollution, and that the air inside buildings is the most harmful. To maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ), the start-up Octopus Lab has developed an innovative SaaS solution called INDALO Supervision. This software service uses artificial intelligence to forecast spikes in pollution and control the ventilation system accordingly. In doing so, it improves the energy performance of the building.
Sensors installed inside buildings gather large amounts of data on the composition of indoor air. The machine learning algorithm used by INDALO Supervision analyses these data to forecast pollution levels and protect the health of occupants. On the basis of these forecasts, INDALO Supervision will then send control signals to the ventilation control system, while also ensuring effective optimisation of building energy performance. The system gives occupants the assurance of being able to breathe high-quality air throughout the day.
What are the most recent developments for your start-up?
We’ve just installed our INDALO Supervision smart building solution at the Louvre-Lens art museum! Since we’re originally from Lille, we’re very proud to be able to contribute to improving the air quality in such iconic buildings in our home region.
What’s been the most unexpected thing that’s happened as a result of the start-up?
Last November, the Air Quality working group chaired by MP Claire Pitollat invited us to a round table discussion at the National Assembly. During the meeting, we talked about the challenges around IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) and explained the unique positioning of Octopus Lab, which is to provide a solution for maintaining optimum air quality beginning at the building design stage, as part of a wider approach to prevention and promotion of IAQ issues among construction industry stakeholders.
So how does your project revolutionise your category?
Climate change is encouraging building occupants to install more and more air-conditioning systems to provide the indoor thermal comfort levels they need. This results in higher energy consumption and higher levels of polluting emissions. Our INDALO Supervision solution reconciles energy consumption with good indoor air quality to provide a healthy environment for everyone.
