A robot to test nuclear reactor thermal sleeves

The cover of a nuclear reactor vessel is fitted with thermal sleeves that allow the control clusters to pass through. EDF’s Industrial Division is the first in the world to develop a robot fitted with an ultrasonic head and camera, which sit on a remotely-operated buggy. It identifies areas that are showing wear, thereby optimising the frequency of replacements that can lead to prolonged outage periods.
Benefits
- Optimised maintenance programmes
- At least 15 M€/year saved by minimising non-production days
- Fewer technician-dependent maintenance interventions
